Bertschi's 50th Anniversary

Bertschi’s journey began in 1975 with its first classrooms in Lowell Elementary’s basement on Capitol Hill.

Bertschi introduces Apple IIe computers, beginning its journey into tech-enhanced learning and digital literacy.

Bertschi pioneers science education with Seattle’s first hands-on elementary science room, led by Julie Blystad.

By 1990, Bertschi’s library had grown from its humble beginnings in 1985, when the collection held fewer than 300 books, to more than 4,000 volumes.

In 1998, Bertschi established its first endowment fund, marking a pivotal step toward long-term sustainability and educational excellence.

Bertschi students showcased their creativity and problem-solving skills on a big stage when they competed in the state firstLEGO League Tournament. 

In 2005, Bertschi began offering Affinity Groups as part of its ongoing commitment to equity and belonging.

In 2014 Bertschi earned the national Green Ribbon for leadership in green building, wellness, and sustainability education.

Brigitte Bertschi retires after 40 years, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, sustainability, and community-focused learning.

In 2025 Bertschi marked its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of joyful learning, community, and innovation while looking ahead to the next chapter of growth.
